about

FREE, the first single from Towers and Trees' forthcoming album "the West Coast," is an anthem about refusing to settle for the artificiality in front of us, and believing in something beyond the horizon. It was inspired by the hard line at the edge of many small, arid towns where the green lawns of suburbia end and the earth returns to desert.

lyrics

I wanna go out to where the city ends
The hills a hundred miles of silhouette
In the stillness I will know that you are gone
And in the darkness you still see that I’m a wreck
And I wanna feel that desert stone beneath my feet
The world comes to an end just past that yard
So let’s climb the highest hill that we can see
Cuz we ain’t free but we could act just like we are
Oh...
I wanna say my prayers beneath the overpass
Lay my soul upon the shards of glass
Make my peace with the highway up above
Cuz when we leave you know I ain’t never lookin’ back
So hail the 99 so full of grace
We’ll hang a wooden cross inside our car
And watch the smile steal across your face
Cuz we ain’t free but we could act just like we are
Oh…
Don’t stop no turning back, Don’t stop no turning back, Don’t stop no turning back
Don’t stop no turning back, Don’t stop no turning back, Don’t stop no turning back
Woah...
I wanna slip outside while the city sleeps
You and me just dancing in the dark
Soaking up the feel of being free
Cuz we ain’t free but we could dance just like we are
